USA vs GHANA

Prediction: USA 2 GHANA 1
With a few of the world superstar teams exiting early from the World Cup, and others failing to play up to their potential..the US team has earned an opportunity to join elite company. By winning their prospective bracket after the dramatic stoppage time goal vs Algeria, the US has avoided the super power teams for the next 2 rounds. This certainly doesn't mean that it'll be EASY....but avoiding Germany and Argentina is BIG. (They have 5 World Cup championships combined). First obstacle: Ghana. The U.S will be seeking revenge as Ghana spoiled the U.S National team in 2006 from the round of 16. Here is the breakdown:
Experience: U.S.
Ghana may have propelled its young players to the round of 16 with local support and without super stars like Michael Essien. But nothing substitutes for World cup experience: Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Demarcus Beasley, Tim Howard etc. Advantage U.S.
Speed: GHANA
One thing is for sure, Ghana is probably the fastest squad in the Cup. They are a physical and at times reckless squad. The American team will need to keep its cool and slow the pace at times.
Offense: U.S
Ghana lacks offense..2 of their goals so far have been Penalty kicks. They will shoot mostly from range and attempt to create chances by set pieces. The U.S has an offense driven 2010 team. Their team has outscored the competition in both the qualifying brackets and Group C World cup finals bracket.
Defense: TIE
Ghana has stellar defense, probably a bit stronger in the back then the U.S. But against the twin towers Altidore and Buddle...Ghana is gonna see something they hadn't anticipated. Its gonna get physical on both ends...
The difference between this U.S. team and those in the past is that we have shown an ability to triumph over adversity. Expect some in this game.
U.S 2 GHANA1

World Cup for NEWBS

Thanks to the guys at WCB, here is a World Cup beginners guide for those who are on the fringe but don't quite understand it all. After watching the last 4 World Cups and missing only a handful of games....I can honestly say there is nothing quite like watching the very best players in the world duke it out. That being said enjoy!
To a soccer newbie, the World Cup can be pretty intimidating.
It’s the most famous and celebrated sporting event on the planet, dwarfing the Olympics and the Super Bowl in terms of global exposure and TV ratings.
But it can be a little complicated if you’re new to the game.
Fear not. The next few paragraphs will have you holding up your end of an intelligent World Cup discussion in no time.
What is it?
Quite simply, the World Cup is a tournament to crown the world champion in what we call soccer. Everyone else calls it football, just so you don’t get confused.
Way back in 2007, 204 nations entered the competition for the 2010 World Cup. It’s played every four years, and believe it or not, it takes almost three of those years in between to whittle the field down from 199 (five teams withdrew without playing a match) to the group of 32 that earned a spot in the finals down in South Africa later this summer.
FIFA, the world organization that runs the World Cup and soccer in general, has divided the world into groups or zones for World Cup qualifying. They are CONCACAF (North American, Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia and Australia), Oceania (New Zealand and other island Pacific nations) and UEFA (Europe).
Not all of these groups, or confederations, is considered equal in terms of qualifying. UEFA got 13 spots for the World Cup, followed by CAF (6, including an automatic bid for the host nation), CONMEBOL (5), AFC (4), CONCACAF (3) and Oceania (1).
Some zones have better teams than others. It’s just that simple.
This year’s tournament
The 32 teams were randomly placed into eight four-team groups back in December, and starting on June 11, each team will play the other three teams in their group.
A win is worth three points, a draw is worth 1 and you get no points for a loss.
The two teams in each group with the most points after the three matches advance. The other two are eliminated.
In the event of a tie, goal difference (goals scored vs. goals allowed) is the first tiebreaker, followed by total goals, results against the teams in the tie, goal difference between the teams in the tie, goals scored in matches between teams in the tie and finally, drawing of lots.
After narrowing the field down to 16, the tournament switches to a knockout format.
The eight group winners play the runners-up from another group and teams keep playing until there is one winner. There can’t be any ties here, so if the match is knotted up after 90 minutes, they’ll play two periods of extra time. If the teams are still tied, they’ll move on to penalty kicks.
History lesson
Only seven nations have ever won the World Cup. They are Brazil (5), Italy (4, including the last one in 2006), Germany (3), Argentina (2), Uruguay (2), France (1) and England (1).
If someone mentions “The Hand of God,” they’re talking about Diego Maradona’s missed handball that lead to a goal in the 1986 World Cup that helped Argentina beat England. In that same game, he scored what most call the goal of the century by dribbling through five English defenders before slamming the ball into the net.
Two World Cups have been decided on penalty kicks, with Brazil beating Italy in 1994 and Italy beating France in 2006. That game was also noteworthy for the headbutt from France’s Zinedine Zidane on Italy’s Marco Materazzi in extra time. Zidane, widely regarded as one of the best players in French history, was sent off for the act.
Glossary
Since the announcers aren’t going to stop and tell you what stuff means, here are a few soccer-specific terms to know:
Pitch – Place where the game is played. You might call it a field
Box – The rectangle 18 yards from the goal line where the goalie stands, and the area in which he’s allowed to use his hands
Yellow card – A warning from the referee to a player for misconduct
Red card – An act of violent conduct – or a second yellow card – that results in the offending player being sent off the field. He can not be replaced, and thus his team must play with 10 men, better known as being “a man down.”
Flop or dive – When a player falls to the ground as if he’s been horribly injured when, in fact, he was just trying to get a free kick from the referee.
Offside rule - OK, it’s like this. In order to receive a pass in the opponent’s half of the field, there must be two players between the guy receiving the pass and the goal. One of those is almost always going to be the goal keeper. This rule does not apply on passes to players running behind the ball.
Own goal - When a player kicks or heads the ball into his own net
Corner kick – If a team kicks or heads the ball over the line behind their own goal, the opposing team gets to put the ball down at the corner flag and knock it into the box.
Quick hitters
If someone asks you for a favorite, you can safely say Brazil. As a highly successful side that plays an entertaining brand of soccer, they’re pretty much everyone’s second-favorite team. … That buzzing sound you’ll hear on the TV broadcasts are vuvuzelas. You’ll either love them or hate them. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground. … Be sure that, at least once, you flip over to Univision right after a goal to hear the Spanish call. It’s a good excuse to yell along with the announcers, stretching out the word goal to the limits of any language.

Chemical Brothers Megamix

Here is a tasty morsel before the main course that is to be "Further", their
upcoming album. This megamix contains some classics so enjoy this and some recent fan questions for the boys!
Q: I know that, all of your fans have a favourite chemical brothers song. But what is yours personally? And for what reasons?
TOM:
Well it changes depending on mood…… sometimes I’m in a “Dream On” kind of mood, others in a “Saturate” kind of way and then I might fancy a bit of “Private Psychedelic Reel”…….. i love ‘em all!!
ED:
Changes all the time: “Chemical Beats” will always be a big favourite of mine, never fails to ignite, when we made it it was completely unique, still such a great sound. Love “Star Guitar” – beautiful vibes, ”Got Glint”, “Saturate,”, “Kling to Me I’ll Klong to You” is deep…. recently I loved “The Pills Won’t Help You Now”.
Q:
Has Steve come up with any more good recipes yet while in Studio or is it still jerk chicken?
TOM:
He does a mean lamb tagine, which is often requested in the studio.
ED:
Dubby’s lamb tagine is incredible, good for winter nights. He mainly eats salads now, shame as any Simpsons fan knows you don’t win friends with salad.
Are you in fact still playing the Wii in the studio?
TOM:
Not for a while – we used to like that one with “false diamonds” whatever that was called.
ED:
We didn’t play so much wii this time. Tom got too good at the tennis game and I can’t stand losing to him at anything, so it ended but also this time round the studio sessions were much more intense so there wasn’t much time for all that.
Q:
I know you would have heard a million stories like this, but I have to tell you anyway. I discovered your music rather late in life when I saw you at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney in 2008. I was 49 then. I have never seen that place go off like it did that night, it turned into one huge party. I will remember that night for the rest of the night. Since then I have bought every album of yours I can find. I totally love all of your music. I had to upgrade my sound system to do it justice.
My question, while I was dancing to your music that night, I felt like I was part of one huge tribe. Everyone in the place, young and old got swept up in the beat. Is this that something that just happens, or do you deliberately use tribal influences when you write your music?
ED:
What you describe I love so much it’s what keeps us going transcendence life can be prosaic to be involved in those moments when people are transported my music is an honour.
TOM:
Well its something that inspired us to make music together in the first place – we felt this same thing at clubs/raves we went to, so i think we always feel the creation of this kind of feeling is the aim of a good gig/dj set…
Q:
What’s been your favourite gig of your career so far?
ED:
Glastonbury in 2007 was incredible, the people made it happen despite the appalling weather, it was beautiful. Off the top of my head i loved Melbourne “Big Day Out” in 2000, “T in the Park” 2004 when i literally felt the vibes, there was a show on a hot sunday night in Paris in 1999, which was demonic in it’s intensity…. so many shows but those are the ones that spring to mind… loads in Japan, Italy and Spain – where people know how to party.
TOM:
Probably the one that sticks in the mind the most was Glastonbury ‘07- we were closing the “Other Stage” on the Sunday night, the weather had been terrible all weekend and it seemed that the people who had braved it out and stayed just wanted to let go and have a good time. We had lots of new music from ‘We Are the Night’ to play and the crowd was amazingly receptive, it was a real sense of music providing the reason for a great communal outpour of abandon, intensity and fun….magical festival!
Q: Who’s the best band/singer you’ve seen live ?
ED:
New Order always.
TOM:
Bob Dylan in tramps nightclub in NYC, Mercury Rev circa 1995, Radiohead at Benicassim and Grand Wizzard Theodore/Kool Herc Irving Plaza 1995!!!!!! Too many more to mention…
Do you miss playing wee small venues and having the instant feedback from the faces just yards from you?
ED:
We still get to play in all sorts of venues.
TOM:
Well we still get this feeling when we dj at clubs like Fabric or Sankeys in Mar.
Q: Ever played a silent disco?
ED:
No thanks.
TOM:
Not yet.
Q:
Do you like burritos?
TOM:
Yes, yes i do.
Q:
I’m DJing at my friends’ wedding in the summer. I’m not very good at DJing, I wont try anything fancy but will let the music do the talking. I’ve just discovered Hall & Oates “I Can’t Go For That” which I reckon may go down well as it should please not just the oldies but the youngsters too as it rocks. But I’m having difficulty finding other songs that cross this age divide and sound great.
So my question to you two is this: What songs can you recommend I play in my Wedding DJ set? your love keeps lifting me higher by jackie wilson, hot love t rex, cure close to me, chic i want your love, let genius function on itunes do the rest, do it again by the beach boys Got any particular favourites that will rock a diverse crowd of grannies, nieces, uncles and 30sometings etc.?!
TOM:
Yes this is the holy grail of wedding djing – “The Uniter”…….my ultimate wedding weapon is “She’s a Rainbow” by the Rolling Stones – great sentiment for a wedding and old and young alike will find its charms irresistible – if any complaints, blame me!
ED:
Tom and I get asked to play weddings all the times, faves of mine include “Hot Love” by T Rex , “Close to Me” by The Cure, “I Want Your Love” by Chic.
If it’s ex ravers wedding “Peace in the Valley” we play. And always try and find a space for “The Whole of the Moon” by the Waterboys.
For multi generational weddings “Do It Aagain” by the “Beach Boys”, “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder.
Q:
If your music career was to end today, which electronic artist or artists would you like us to follow? (a passing of the torch!)
TOM:
What a weird question…..
Q:
What are your favorite flavors of ice cream?
ED:
I’m a vanilla man.
TOM:
The real mint chocolate chip.
Q:
If you had to ditch all your production kit except one item, what item would you keep and why?
TOM:
The EMS synthi aks synthesizer – the source of so much inspiration from exit planet dust to further. its a machine that seems to be alive….
Q:
I’ve recently listened to the “Live 05 EP’” so many creative sounds are added in the mix that enhance the experience. How come you guys don’t have more live CDs?
TOM:
I don’t know really, its a nice idea….
Q:
How long did it take and what did you make chemical beats on????…apart from a 303?
TOM:
Wrote that song in my bedroom at my folks house… i made it with a Roland Juno 106, an Akai S1000 sampler, a Boss Heavy Metal guitar pedal, a Fender Telecaster guitar and a short wave radio……no 303,the lead sound is the Juno through the guitar pedal.
Q:
What collaborations can we expect to hear on the new Chemical Brothers album? Hopefully a return to working with Beth Orton?
TOM:
None on further, but probably some more in the future. would love to work with beth again as she’s ace.
Q:
Do you consider what you do to be work or play?
ED:
Bit of both.
TOM:
Well theres a lot of work that goes into making it feel like play….
Q:
What compressors do the Chems use when working with bass? Analog, digital or combo of both AND any tips for aspiring beatmakers?
TOM:
Generally hardware compressors are used LA2A, distressor, various dbx units, I also like the Anamod ATS1 on bass. but no hard and fast rules really- whatever sounds good on the source we will use.
Tips for beatmakers is just to try and make something interesting be it with sound or rhythm or both!!!
Will the gigs be a 3D goggles kind of affair like some folks are rumouring?
TOM:
No.

IO2 HelioDisplay= one step closer to Princess Leia in the bedroom

Remember that hologram that R2D2 displayed when delivering the message to Obi Wan in Star Wars? No? Cmon! "Help me Obi Wan..you're my only hope.."

Well one of the leaders in holo-display technology is a company called I02 Technology and they boast a 120" capable display. Supported files are avi, jpeg via a compact flash card fed directly into the unit, or any video from a direct source. The demos shown are done via a pc connection which shows an easy plug and play setup that takes just minutes to get up and running.

The limitations and specs are listed in the faq section of the site. So how much moolah is it gonna be to proudly display the Death Star plans in your living room, you ask? Heliodisplay prices range from $39,000USD to $66,000 USD for the hardware, and more for turnkey solutions. So...while the technology is oh so close..affordable coolness is still waiting somewhere in a future Best Buy..far far away.

My WePad can beat up your Ipad

WePad Revealed
Article from Ubergizmo says it best.
We've talked about a few technical details of the WePad before, but now we have all the specifications, along with a table (partially in German) that compares it with the iPad (click on the title to head to the full post). This Android-powered tablet will have access to the Android Market Place, but also to a WePad AppStore. The WePad has been built to consume digital newspaper and magazine and, there is a hope that it could attract elderly users in addition to the general public. "Elderly are the core target group of newspaper and magazine publishing house" says the Neofonie, the company behind the WePad. Making an electronic reading device for the elderly is no small challenge and I wonder if this group of users would really enjoy the ton of widgets (and the small font) as the WePad renderings show. On the hardware side, WePad is a little bigger and heavier than iPad, but it also has a superior screen resolution, a webcam and USB ports. The iPad has a 40% advantage in battery life.

It's hard to guess how good it is, because we haven't played with the WePad (we spent 1hr with the iPad), but I do have some reservations about the user interface and apps responsiveness. That's the first thing that I would check.
The refreshing bit of news is that WePad has been built with a purpose: reading newspaper and magazines. Most slates are built with because it's the new fashionable thing to do... Because it has a purpose, we can only hope that the user experience (find, manage, sync and consume content) will be smooth.
At this time, we don't have any information on the content pricing. Many eBook users have been complaining that eBooks are too expensive, sometimes more so than their paper versions. While publishers can enjoy higher margins, it is very unlikely that customers will keep buying at these prices, but in the market will decide.
Neofonie doesn't "go to war" with Apple, but says that it wants to offer an alternative to the iPad. To be competitive, the WePad will be priced lower than Apple's iPad - how much lower, we don't know, but we guess not that much lower. It will feature Flash and Adobe Air, the platform that many magazine publishers including Stern Magazine and Wired, have chosen for their digital version. Others will join for sure. The exact release date is not known but the official word is: "We will release further details on our partners and product timeline on April 12".
I guess that Android fans too will pick-up the tablet, just because it's "open". The hardware and pricing are good enough to be attractive, and having Android as an OS makes it much more compelling to developers and even users than tablets like JooJoo (some would say "bad JooJoo"). Next stop: we'll try to get our hands on one.

BONFIRES----

Bonfires are an indie alternative band formed in Cheddleton, Staffordshire. Members are Stuart Whiston, Darren Edwards and Mike Lo Bosco. Their sound is indie music operating outside of the tight-trousered fashions of the moment. With shades of early Verve, Echo and The Bunnymen, the Cure, Oasis and a dash of Jesus and Mary Chain reverberating through them, Bonfires songs are well heeled, resplendent with soaring melodies and huge life affirming choruses. Are they super original? Not really, but certainly a fun listen!

The ultimate marriage COD4+Star Wars=Heaven

All from Moddb...very cool!
Welcome to Star Wars Mod: Galactic Warfare, a modification for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
All began with a blaster-model, and soon the idea to extend this theme as a non commercial fan project was born. In the meantime, our project is taking shape and we have found a couple of new comrades in addition to the team already involved in the development of Apesgorod. So far, the core team consists of Mapicted, Xfckup, OLD MAN WITH GUN, Xiao, Rollercoaster, T.R. Graves, Sizzer, Vernichter, Gama, Matroskin, Novemberdobby and ZeroY.
It's our goal to unite our favourite game CoD4:MW with the classic universe of Star Wars, as the best trilogy ever. With this total conversion we will combine lot of the known battlegrounds, characters and weapons of Star Wars with the fantastic gameplay of the COD4-Multiplayer. Either as a trooper of the Imperial Forces or as a soldier from the Rebel Alliance you will fight on some different locations.
On the following pages we would like to give you a little insight into our work and its progress. If you like to get more information about us, you are always
welcomed at www.blackmonkeys.de
The non-comercial Star Wars Mod: Galactic Warfare is operated by Star Wars as well as Call of Duty fans. Star Wars, its characters, locations, weapons and all associated items

You can do it on the table, the hood of a car..even on the ceiling!!

Alright get your mind out of the gutter and into the future! In this case the future is a few months away, and it looks VERY cool. DISPLAX™
Multitouch Technology turns any non-conductive material into an interactive multitouch surface. Based on projected capacitive technology, DISPLAX™ Multitouch Technology has been developed on a transparent thinner-than-paper polymer film which can be applied to a variety of flat and curved surfaces including glass, plastic and wood. Imagine interactive wallpaper, surfing the web or checking recipes on your counter top..the possibilities are endless. The technology works by a grid of nanowires placed throughout the film recognizing touch screen interactivity. These input signals are then passed to a microprocessor controller that analyzes the data and determines the exact location where the contact took place.

The hypersensitive lightweight “skin” features air movement detection as well as touch sensitivity, so will, for what is thought to be the first time, react to a user blowing on it, registering both the intensity and direction of the air flow.

Atlanta Brave Jason Heyward is #1 IN THE WORLD!

Ok maybe not..but he IS the #1 prospect in all of baseball and MIGHT be ready to play
outfield for the Braves come opening day. He will be competing with McLouth and Melky Cabrera for a starting spot and management won't be too eager to force him into the jaws of the bigs after the "Schafer" situation last year. But if this guy plays like he has shown he can (In 99 game appearances, he was a .323 hitter with 17 homers and 10 steals in the minors) the Braves might showcase the golden boy sooner than later.

Get funky with Boyz Noize

One of the most eagerly anticipated Essential Mix's of recent times, Boys Noize aka Alex Ridha, took to the decks to provide us with 2 hours that he promises is mixed mainly on vinyl. With his new album Power out this month it is somewhat surprising that the mix includes none of his own productions. Instead we are treated to a journey that starts off in jackin house territory before gradually building as it dips in and out of genres as far ranging as dubstep, techno and disco. It's probably one of the boldest mixes of the year as it shows off many of Ridha's influences yet features little of his trademark noisey electro and techno hybrid sound. Essential listening right here.

Buy a hybrid and save the earth!!

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid is on the way and while it won't quite save the earth..it sure looks cool! It is both a laptop and portable tablet in one package. When closed the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid looks like a regular laptop, and with a rounded aesthetic and a red shimmery paint job it's a nice looking one. Under the lid there's chiclet-style keyboard surrounded by a fun rubberized palmrest with integrated touchpad. When docked, the U1 looks and feels like any other snazzed-up laptop, with an Intel CULV processor and a 128GB SSD running Windows 7 Home Premium. Lenovo's site shows a summer release.

ATD Review of autoKratz Animal

Yeah Yeah I know what you're gonna say.."Darryl, can you please remove your lips from the proverbial arse of London's music scene?". The answer is, well..not yet! There are too many great Indie acts with great new albums out that my tea time must not end. One of those acts is electronic duo autoKratz. In 2008 they released a mini album Down & Out In Paris & London. This album received high praise and in 2009 they put many of these gems on their full length Animal. One such track is Stay the Same which we feature in the video here. The album is a plethora of electronic bliss with David Cox adding a vocal layer sporadically throughout a minefield of retro/techno grooves. The standout is Always More which resembles a B side from Depeche Mode's Violator. Grab a copy today!

Surf Naked! Here's the lowdown on the new wireless power trend

One day you WILL be telling your grand kids silly story's about spending countless hours untangling cords and searching high and low for that one ac adapter for your 'now obsolete' CD player. The reason..wireless power and connectivity. There are 3 types of technology used to accomplish this: inductive, radio and resonance charging.
In inductive charging, an adapter equipped with contact points is attached to the device's back plate. When the device requires a charge, it is placed on a conductive charging pad, which is plugged into a socket. This method is what the folks at Powermat and some other newcomers on the scene have been raving about. The disadvantage is that you must buy all the added components to achieve the "wireless" convenience, and you must do this for EVERY device! Unless popular company's start to build their devices with these components, this type of method may be trumped quickly.
Radio charging is used for charging items with small batteries and low power requirements, such as watches, hearing aids, medical implants, cell phones, MP3 players and wireless keyboard and mice. Radio waves are already in use to transmit and receive cellular telephone, television, radio and wifi signals. Wireless radio charging works similarly. A transmitter, plugged into a socket, generates radio waves. When the receiver attached to the device is set to the same frequency as the transmitter, it will charge the device's battery. The folks at Rca Airnergy Article by Ohgizmo have been successful at using Wifi to do some cellphone charging and more!
Finally, Resonance charging is used for items that require large amounts of power, such as an electric car, robot, vacuum cleaner or laptop computer. In resonance charging, a copper coil attached to a power source is the sending unit. Another coil, attached to the device to be charged, is the receiver. Both coils are tuned to the same electromagnetic frequency, which makes it possible for energy to be transferred from one to the other. The method works over short distances (3-5 meters). One new example of this technology in use is by Dell. Here is the article describing the new wireless charger for their Z laptop. Dell Latitude Z
Verdict: Wifi (radio) charging technology seems most useful for our everyday gadgets.
If this truly works as efficiently as they say, look for all of us to have 'hot spots' in our homes where our everyday gadgets come to lay in the 'wifi sun'.

Jurassic Park is VERY close...

Watch CBS News Videos Online
Scientists are advancing genetic engineering so quickly that the possibility of a "Jurassic Park" within the next few decades is very feasible. The ethical question will certainly come into play whether bringing back extinct species is a welcome poke to the dynamic of our universe. It will be very tough however to argue against this if researchers begin to use the technology to save current endangered species. Once that precedent is set, the games afoot..

The XX

One of my new favorite bands, The XX hail from west England. Combining R&B with an electronic twist, the dark melodies lend themselves well to those seeking a departure from todays boring, ordinary American Idol driven crap. The are playing the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta March 24!
